Huntingdon Drama Club: Nell Gwynn by Jessica Swale

Huntingdon Drama Club's Autumn 2023 production is Nell Gwynn by Jessica Swale. This play, described by The Guardian as 'bawdy, playful & highly entertaining' tells the rags to riches tale of Nell Gwynn, the first female superstar of the London stage. The period is the late 1600s - King Charles II has re-opened the theatres and decreed that, for the first time, women shall be allowed to perform on stage. Renowned actor Charles Hart spots the talented Nell and she joins the King's Theatre Company where she wows the London theatregoers. Spotted from the royal box she begins an infamous affair with King Charles II and so the legend of Nell Gwynn is born. The play premiered at Shakespeare's Globe in 2016 and transferred into the West End where it won the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. This vibrant and colourful play packed full of wit, music, song and bawdy humour is not to be missed!
