Community Cafe

9th November 2018 by Commemoration Hall

Throughout October and November, we've been opening our kitchen on a Saturday for hot drinks and - depending on volunteers - great value hot snacks.

The "community cafe" is helping spread the word we'll be open soon. We'll be needing volunteers for all sorts of tasks, so please get in touch if you can lend a hand.

Whether you need a break from shopping, or a shelter from the rain, everyone is welcome to pop in, and we're dog-friendly. All proceeds help support the Redevelopment Project.

Welcome Back!

30th September 2018 by Commemoration Hall

It's been 18 months since we held our Open Day in March 2017. We were glad to see so many people, and to hear your suggestions for the Hall's future.

The decision to close the Hall in April last year was made after we had analysed our income and expenditure and determined that we were making significant losses and would have run out of funds by last September.

We are hoping to redevelop the Hall through fundraising and donation. Our plans will be flexible, so that transformation of the building will be in line with the available funds.

Our new building needs to be profitable, and to do that we need to diversify the activities that will bring us income. Renting out our spaces wasn’t enough.

We had hoped to have been able to present a viable and fully costed Business Plan long before now, but a number of issues prevented us from doing so. We have re-examined our situation and hope to find a way of funding our continued operation that will allow us to open on a limited basis.

We aim to create a café serving hot food and drinks throughout the day in the Rotunda, and spaces that will be available to hire for performances, community groups, parties, fairs, meetings, conferences, etc. We are very pleased to be hosting the WW1 memorial community presentation of “Oh! What a Lovely War” in November; it's especially fitting that it is taking place here, and we hope to see many of you there.

We will need the help of our local community, and we'll be launching several fundraising activities to help with both running costs, and the redevelpment fund. If you are interested in helping to staff our refreshments stall in the hall and assist with front-of-house duties for any upcoming events, or get involved in fundraising, we'd love to hear from you.
